William headed back to the coast today. Friends have called and said they could see part of his (new, only owned it for like a week) house, and the part they can see is... well, still standing. No idea what he's really going to find when he gets there. His parents were in Georgia, but no word on their house. Pass Christian was supposed to be hardest hit...
Willima took food, gas, candles, a generator, water, an axe and a saw (among other emergancy supplies). He's hoping to find his house in good enough shape to stay in while he helps friends and family find what's left of their houses.
Here in Starkville, we have power. And water. But the stores are out of everything survivalwise. It got bad for awhile, but most of the damage here was due to downed trees. And power surges... Chad's computer (which was just fixed) died (even behind an APC UPS), and the Media Center might have died, too (even unplugged!). Overall, not too bad, and at least we have insurance.
We might be looking for a way to get down to the coast this weekend, and take Chad's truck full of supplies. Not sure we're going to be able to make it work, but we are going to try... I think we'd be there now if we didn't have to teach the rest of the week.
I'm tired. But life is pretty good right now... guess it evens out.
So Chad's taking the job in Houston (in case there's like, anyone left who hasn't heard). We move to Houston officially in January (right after the new year). Yay! Having a job means we'll have money ... not that we're going to buy a bunch of stuff with it, in theory. it'll just be nice to know we aren't broke, and be able to actually start some kind of retirement or something. Or buy me a new Shelby Mustang. Or something like that. ;-)
So yeah. We'll have insurance, too. Yay!
Not sure what I'm going to do when we get out there. My choices look something like htis at the moment: go back to school for a PhD in CS; go back to school for a MS/PhD in Psychology; get a job teaching; get a job programming; or take up watching soap operas and eating bonbons.
We get to go out to Houston and look for a house at some point... I think in October. not sure if we're buying or renting yet... so many decisions.
Alanis is awesome. Just in case you wondered.
School is great this semester, although I have a huge amount of work to do. I htink graduating should be less work than the rest of school, but it's not. I still have to schedule my comps and stuff, so they'll give me my dimploma. *sigh*
Anyway. I might be called to go and socialize here in a few minutes... when the vampires are done vampiring. although my socializing will probably be cut short, as everyone here will be drinking, and I don't know enough people in the group to really feel like drinking. That, and I'm dead tired. one drink would put me out like a light ;-)
Hopefully, this will publish, and I'll be able to post again soon.
I am now the proud owner of a brand new Toshiba Satellite M45 laptop. My other laptop (the old one, which was also a Toshiba Satellite) is currently residing at Best Buy, where they may or may not ever succeed in fixing it, but I no longer own it. And as soon as my loan money comes in, a chunk of it goes to pay for my new computer. *sigh*.
But at least I am connected to the outside world now. Yay! And I can actually use my PDA, which has been gathering dust for like, 2 months. YAY!
I like the new laptop, except I think that the Y key is a little sticky. If it gets worse, I guess I'll take it back into the shop.
In other more interesting news, I *might* actually be able to run Tron on this one. (My old laptop lacked the 3d accellerator needed). When I get that far down the list of things to install, I'll let you know. ;-)
