Daycare crisis resolved. Yay! We found a school that looks like it may be a better fit for us, and is way cheaper (which was surprising). They (by what can only be the grace of God) had *1* spot in their infant room. All of the other good places were full, or even had waiting lists (I was told at one school they would have room for a 6-month old in February. Which is more than 6 months from now). So we're very glad it worked out. There was much stress in the interim.
Tonight is Parents Night Out. So Chad and I are going out, sans baby, who will be in good company with other little children. No clue what we're going to do yet - dinner or something? At the very least, we're going to go somewhere and pretend that we are real people and not worry about the stroller or when the baby ate last or if she's getting fussy (unless she's so fussy they call us to get her). That's the plan, anyway.
Tomorrow is scrapbooking day again. Yay for getting out! We'll see how much I get done (I need to print more pictures...)
It looks like our insurance will pay for the leaky windows. So yay for that... now we just have to get the work done. And figure out how to do it while still living in the house, since we'll pretty much need to rebuild the back wall of the house. Lucky for me, Chad gets to deal with the logistics of all that.
I watched The Watchmen this week. I don't know what I expected, but that sure wasn't it... at the end of the movie? I still wasn't sure exactly what the point of it was, or who was a good guy and who was a bad guy. Or if there even were good guys and bad guys. And what was up with Dr. Manhattan's super-anatomically-correct nakedness? Anyway. It was ok, but not really great. Maybe if I read the graphic novel or something, it would have made more sense.
I found out this week that not only did the guy who plays Jim Brass on CSI have a bit part Mrs. Doubtfire... he was also in 3 Men and a Baby, and a ton of other random stuff. imdb.
Leverage is in it's new season, and I think it's just as good (or maybe better?) than last season. Funny stuff - when I have time for TV :-)
WALL-E Went to see WALL-E on Friday... it was great! A really fun, silly, sweet movie, that definitely showed off advances in both Disney's storytelling ability and Pixar's great ideas and animation.
And the short before the movie was really funny. Like, crying-because-you're-laughing-so-hard funny.
Bridge to Terabithia I finally watched it. It is an awesome movie. Almost as good as the book, and made me cry every bit as hard. Not sure Chad really enjoyed it though...
But yeah. Five stars. I really liked the girl they got to play Leslie. And it had the girl from Hitchhiker's Guide, too.
Harry Potter (No Spoilers) Saw Harry Potter OotP at the midnight show Tuesday night / Wednesday morning. I liked it, a lot, even though it was shorter than I might have hoped for. I would have made the movie like, 11 hours long.
They managed to cover all the high points from the book, only omitting a few things that I would like to think are vital in later books (a silver locket, which should be in Book 7, perhaps?). They did manage to include my favorite line from the book, even though it wasn't particularly important to the plot, which made me happy.
One nitpick, and then I'll stop... they repeatedly used a spell from Half-Blood Prince. Which doesn't make sense, because Harry et al. couldn't have learned that spell until next year. (I'm enough of a dork that this actually pulled me out of the movie).
Anyway, overall, I'd give it 4.5 out of 5. Would have been a 5, if it was a little longer, and if they had included the damn silver locket.
Keeping Mum I finally finally got around to renting and watching Keeping Mum. I was kind of worried about it, as I thought that Rowan Atkinson might bring some kind of Mr. Bean silliness to the movie, counteracting the amazing acting ability of Maggie Smith.
However, I was pleasantly surprised. The movie was very cute in a British-comedy Arsenic-and-old-lace kind of way. And Rowan Atkins was slightly less silly than I expected.
I'd give it four out of five, with it not being five out of five only because 1) Rowan Atkinson was still kind of silly, and 2) Patrick Swayze is looking really old.
Other random movie comments: I didn't figure out the plot-twist until Maggie Smith's character said it out loud... Chad made fun of me for this, as he had it figured out from the first. Also, beware that this is a British movie, including some nudity (although nothing worse that what you'd find in Monty Python's Flying Circus).
I had to learn the hard way... Um. So yeah, Bob the Builder. But now, make that a midget pr0n version of Bob the Builder. (Someone warned me that this existed, and I didn't believe them. I had to see it for myself, which was probably dumb, and has probably scarred Chad for life).
Anyway. Had a great night tonight. Ate dinner (ribs and chicken) with David and Nichole, went to see Night at the Museum, almost ate donuts, and now I'm killing itme on the internet, proving to myself that mankind truely has descended to a point where people find a reason to post pictures of midgets wearing bob the builder hats and posing in um, very interesting positions. I'm just saying, I didn't think we'd fallen quite that far yet... but I was wrong. The intarweb is a strange and scary place. And on that note (and before I see anything else scary or wrong), I'm going to bed.
It's funny what you know and still go on pretending With no good evidence you'll ever see that happy ending
Overview of a "typical" day... So since I never have anything interesting to blog about, I thought I'd outline a typical day so that you people know what I do all day (you know, the stuff that's too boring to blog about).
Sometime between 5am and 6:30am (depending on how ambitious I am being), my alarm goes off. I hit it about a hundred and fifty times before getting up, because it's really hard to get out of the most comfortable bed in the world. I end up actually out of bed between 6am and 7:30am (typically, closer to 7 or 7:30). I try and find something semi-professional to wear to work (why doesn't the laundry wash itself?!)... let the dogs out... stumble into the kitchen and make sammichs. Two sammichs, one for me and one for Chad. Both with low fat cheese and lean lunch meat (because we're trying to eat healthy or something). I pack the rest of my lunch (fruit, yogurt, and propel fitness water), and somehow manage to grab a muffin or some other kind of vaugely healthy breakfast food while running out the door.
I drive. For like, an hour. And listen to an audio book (just finished: "Blink: the power of thinking without thinking", by Malcolm Gladwell). Then I finially get to work.
After having to show or swipe my badge three times at three different places (I mean really... you would think we were military or something), I make it to my office... And sit down at my computer. Where I stay, working dilegently, for you know, 8 hours or so. Currently, I'm working on a variety of projects that include icons, gui components, and trying to make sense of way too much source code written by way too many different people. Interestingly enough, one of my projects has generated enough interest that I'll be making presentations on it to two different groups of people in the next month. Typically, I eat lunch at my desk, because I think it's stupid to burn an hour on lunch when I'm eating a sammich by myself anyway.
Then I drive. For like, an hour. And listen to an audio book. (next week: A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleline L'Engle).
I get home and let the dogs out and cook dinner (why don't the dishes wash themselves?!)... typically, we finish eating dinner just in time to go to karate or go sign on to the computers and roleplay. Unless it's Monday or Friday, when we either end up watching a movie or finding some other way to totally waste time.
Then I try and go to bed. I have the best of intentions of going to bed at like, 10pm, but I hardly ever manage that. I make it to bed between 11pm and midnight...
So yeah. I am totally blogging from work right now, because if I didn't blog from work, I would never be able to blog.
I have still only logged like, 10 hours on Kingdom Hearts II, which makes me sad. I played for an hour and a half the other night while Chad was playing Civ 4 with Brian, and all I really accomplished was making my thumbs hurt. *sigh*
This weekend, our time will be taken up by lusting after the house we want, and watching Clerks (on DVD on Friday night) and Clerks II (in the theater on Saturday).
Everything is fine... Nothing is broken. Actually, lots of shit is still broken. The images and style sheets, however, are fixed for the moment. Now, on to what I was really supposed to be doing today. Unpacking. And waiting for the cable guy. And waiting for companies to get back to me, and tell me if I have another interview (already had one phone interview this morning, and an online screening test thing last night).
More Serenity Here's a take on Serenity by Tycho, of PennyArcade fame. Really it doesn't say much new, but reinforces the fact that, yes, I must watch the series. And that at some point during the watching of the series, I'll be like, "Oh... Suddenly it all makes so much sense." :-)
Serenity So I went and saw Serenity last night (Saturday night). And I thought it was an ok movie. Not a great movie, not the best movie in the world, not "the next Star Wars", just ok.
Apparently, this makes me odd.
Given, I have't seen Firefly (which makes me an oddity in the geek world, I know)... So I didn't have the it's-going-to-be-awesome fan-girl attachment to the film going into it.
But yeah. Things I liked about the movie: The plot was fairly interesting, the characters were decently well developed (having a season of character development helped), the acting was ok, and they did some cool things with memory and madness and stuff. Things I didn't like: They overdid the CG, given their budget. The movie was full of CG, but it wasn't quite all there (with the exception of a few scenes where it was really good). I think they could have done less CG and gotten better quality, and it would have made the movie look better overall. The dialog was a little odd... like charachters would talk normally for several minutes, and then break some weird grammer rule or something, and it sounded out of place (I'm told this fits with the TV show). Also, the camera angels were weird, and they would move the camera so fast that the background strobed (which generally makes me sick)... and they did this a lot. The fight scenes weren't as well done as they could have been... but they were interesting, at least.
Anyway. Enough for now. I have to sleep or something.
In case you wondered, Sin City is an awesome movie. The cinematography was incredible, the movie actually looked like a graphic novel. Which is way cool. However... it was not a movie for people who dislike nudity. Just thought I'd warn you. I went to see it opening night, and the couple at the end of the row I was sitting on got up and left at the first pair of boobies they saw. (I'm not sure exactly what they were expecting...)
But yeah, the plot (of all the sotries in the movie) was well thought out and followed the novels pretty closely, from what I hear. It made for a really great movie. :-)
I, Robot Not so much like the book... but and awesome movie from the standpoint of Artificial Intelligence. More like the book than I expected... and much more AI theory than I expected. If you have never read the book.. it's a pretty good sci-fi movie with good graphics and only a few slightly unbelievable parts, overall ok. If you read the book... enjoy the line in the credits: "Suggested by a book by Isaac Asimov". The nude scene with Will Smith was totally not important to the plot, and was (I assume) designed only to show off all the work he did preparing for Ali. Overall: Good movie, I'll prolly buy it on DVD.
Collateral Weird, screwed up movie. But good. In a weird, screwed up sort of way. The camera guy was on crack, though... the whole movie looks like he was carrying the camera on his shoulder. Like Blair Witch, only wihtout the running, and they didn't mic him to get the paniced breathing. Really. I think I might want to see it again... but in a little while, not right away. Tom Cruise made a good and totally beliveable badguy... So I guess that should make up for the cinematography.
um... so like, those are the only movies I've seen recently... Sorry?
Life is good. Spring break is upon us (or, well, almost). I am about sick of wedding planning... but that's ok.
I feel the need to rant... why, oh why, is it ok to use some words on prime time tv and not others? For instance, you can say ass, but not shit... bitch, but not pussy... all in the same show? either bleep all of them... or don't bleep all of them... but not be all weird about it... I don't know, I guess I just don't understand being all selective.
Anyway... so... rant finished. Other things going on here... Not much. Really. I think Chad and I are going to see Hidalgo tomorrow night... that's about it :-)
I might have some cool updates to the Wesley site soon... working on it.
Interesting. Blogger looks much different than it did this morning... maybe it's cause I'm on a mac. but I doubt it. I think they changed something and didn't tell me. hmph.
Anyway. So.... About life since the blog went down.
I am still not entirely well... but, as of yet, the docotrs aren't going to do anything about it. I go see the surgeon on the 8th (Monday), but he probably won't do anything either. Meanwhile, I'm supposed to think good thoughts and concentrate on getting better, all while maintaining a decent gpa and getting 8-10 hours of sleep a night. Ha. Ha. Ha.
So I'm doing ok grade wise this semester... I'm a little behind, but catching up fast... I haven't missed a due date for anything yet *knocks on desk* And I got 100 on both my first quiz of the year, and my first programming assignment (the Python one)... which makes me very happy.
Having Chad in town is really nice... not that we see that much more of each other :-) His work schedule and my class schedule are at odds at the moment... but it's all good. It's interesting adjusting to having him back...
Dad is doing his last (we hope) round of chemo this week... we'll know by the end of this week or next week whether its working, and what they want to do next.
Underworld comes out in a couple weeks... I'm psyched about that :-) Chad's happy because there's a movie I actually want to go see... I'm happy becase it's all about vampires and stuff... everybody's happy.
I think I'm going on an interesting outing this weekend... minus Chad, who will prolly go home to Memphis. I also have to go home sometime this weekend (like, saturday or Sunday) so I'm home for my appt. on Monday. This will also entail missing all of my classes Monday... but may allow me to vote in Tuesday's election, like, not by absentee. That would be fun. Unless they decide to cut me open or something, I should be back for class on Tuesday (I don't have class until 11)... which is good, because Dr. Clifford will hate me forever if I miss class. And we don't want our teachers to hate us.
anyway.... I must run and do homework. Some more. For like, forever. Or at least until 7 or so... then I get to go to Wesley. And after Wesley.... more homework. Yay.
Dude... I have missed so many good quotes by not having my blog up. you have no idea. *sigh* I'll have to see if I can catch up. Today's quote:
